D05 → wanderMust

In the wanderMust series (2022), I draw from feminist, new materialist, posthumanist perspectives to extend my contemporary dance practice out of the studio, and into public space. It is motivated by my urgent will to find new, more response-able ways of practising and performing as a (post)human in the Anthropocene. This research unfolds predominantly from and through the work of philosophers Karen Barad and Rosi Braidotti, as well as through the proposition of the “somatic camera” by dance artist and academic Heike Salzer

After studying ways of placing my own body in landscapes where I feel ‘out of place’, I devised the wanderMust practice and shared it with 8 different performers in 7 different sites. With each perfomer, we chose a landscape where they feel ‘out of place’ and spent 3 hours together, engaging with the space through a materialist posthumanist lens and embracing the ever-shifting layers of agency in the sites. Towards the end of the session, the performers find a landing place in the landscape both physically and phenomenologically. All throughout, I attempted to co-create with the human and more-than-human, the living and non-living agents of these public spaces.
